Washbank Farm 1937

Despite the shock of finding himself with a gun in his back, George’s eyes scan around looking for a possible weapon, but his antagonist seems to have read his thoughts, and gives George a chilling warning.

‘Please don’t do anything hasty, Mr Bradley, we don’t want any accidents, at least not yet anyway. If you would kindly step away from the apparatus.’

With his hands raised, George slowly backs away from the main frame controls. The man with the gun backs away too, keeping him covered with the revolver, noting the pair of tinted goggles George has perched on his forehead.

‘There, that’s better, now would you mind stepping over this way to the strong box, I’d like you to open it for me. And please don’t tell me you haven’t got the key, I would only have to shoot you in the leg, and that would be rather unpleasant and noisy, and we don’t want to rouse Mr Bullman and his family at the farmhouse because that would be most unfortunate for them.’

George walks slowly over to the strong box and very carefully retrieves the key from his trouser pocket. He kneels in front of the box and opens it; inside it is stuffed with notes and drawings for the Gateway.

Keeping the gun trained on George whilst he removes the documents from the strong box, the gunman looks around and takes in George’s handiwork.

Dominating one end of the building are the six iron columns, each around eight feet tall, supporting a circular steel latticework beam joining them together around the top, forming the outer cage of the Gateway. A copper mesh supported on ceramic high voltage insulators covers the top with heavy cables leading off to the main field generating machinery.

On each of the six columns attached near the base are what appears to be electromagnetic coils surrounding substantial glass containers half filled with a deep red metallic looking liquid, and what appears to be high voltage electrodes feeding into the liquid on three sides.

A further bundle of cables and hoses trail away from the Gateway to the main control frame, and a pair of heavy looking gas cylinders standing in the corner of the barn give off a cold white vapour which sinks down and spreads out across the floor.

‘Very good George – may I call you George? – you have been busy haven’t you George, most impressive!’

‘Who the hell are you, what do you want?’

‘I would have thought that was blindingly obvious George, as for who, may I introduce myself: Herr Rinehart Krause at your service.’

‘You don’t sound very German.’

Krause appears to be in his mid-thirties, slim with his blonde hair trimmed into an undercut which is quite popular in Germany according to the news reels. Krause feigns an upper-class English accent and says, ‘That would be all thanks to my Oxford education, old boy.’

The barn door opens, and a second man enters carrying a leather satchel. He glances out across the yard before stepping in and closing the door, addressing Krause in English but with heavy German accent.
